Passage

We all have formed our own definitions of happiness right from childhood. A lot of these perceptions are because of conditioned development i.e. they are a part of our habits due to repetitive inculcation by parents, teachers and the society in general. That is why, none of us has actually pondered about what exactly makes us feel happy! This feeling has been left to our sub-conscience and we simply feel the happiness according to the situationwe are in. A lot of small things can also give happiness to us.

Question 1:

Which sentence mentions the consequence of the influence?

  • a) The first sentence. (We all have’childhood.)
  • b) The second sentence. (A lot of’general.)
  • c) The third sentence. (That is why’happy!)
  • d) The fourth sentence. (This feeling has’in.)
  • e) The fifth sentence. (A lot of’us.)

Correct Answer: (c)

Explanation:

The author of the given text says that we do not grow up with our own independent ideas of happiness. We are influenced by our parents, teachers and society. He says that as a consequence of this influence, we do not think about what actually gives us happiness. We react according to our sub-conscience and never think about what exactly makes us feel happy. This is the consequence of the influence and it is mentioned in thethird sentence.

Question 2:

Which sentence shows that what happiness means for one it does not mean for the other?

  • a) The first sentence. (We all have’childhood.)
  • b) The second sentence. (A lot of’general.)
  • c) The third sentence. (That is why’happy!)
  • d) The fourth sentence. (This feeling has’in.)
  • e) The fifth sentence. (A lot of’us.)

Correct Answer: (a)

Explanation:

The given paragraph mainly focuses on the general development of all of us and on how we all never ponder about what gives us true happiness. The author does not talk about individual differences in a direct manner. Yet, we can infer from the first sentence that happiness depends on the individual. The author says that we all have formed our own definitions of happiness. This means that each one of us has a distinct definition of happiness, which depends on his upbringing. The first sentence thus is the correct answer option.

Question 3:

From which sentence do we know the issue that the author is drawing our focus to?

  • a) The first sentence. (We all have’childhood.)
  • b) The second sentence. (A lot of’general.)
  • c) The third sentence. (That is why’happy!)
  • d) The fourth sentence. (This feeling has’in.)
  • e) The fifth sentence. (A lot of’us.)

Correct Answer: (e)

Explanation:

The author opens the paragraph by saying that we grow under the influence of our society to such an extent that we do not develop our own idea of happiness. We gain happiness according to what our sub-conscience decides. In the end of the paragraph, the author brings our focus to his real aim. He states that a lot of small things can also bring happiness to us and this is a possibility that we do not explore. The intensions of the author are clear by his using the word ‘also’. He intends to make us realize that happiness is beyond the limitations of our sub-conscious selves and we need to see beyond our conditioned development.
