RC Passage

In 1985, Alastair Macdonald noticed that his children’s sense of the holiday spirit centred around Santa Claus and stockings, not the true story of Christmas. But when Macdonald went shopping for more spiritual bedtime reading, he was disappointed to see that holiday classics, like ‘The Night Before Christmas’ and ‘Rudolph,’ ignored the Christmas message. Over the next 25 years, Macdonald would work to create a new children’s Christmas book, a classic with engaging wordplay akin to Dr. Seuss, but that communicated the true story of Christmas. Macdonald’s enchanting book, entitled ‘First Christmas,’ tells the story of Christmas through the eyes of an unexpected narrator -; Joseph’s loyal donkey, Zeke. Zeke faithfully recounts the events of the Christmas story in a playful, singsong voice that appeals to children without compromising the dignity and seriousness of the birth of Christ. The story provides a soothing balm for parents hoping to re-focus their children’s attention on the spiritual aspects of the holiday season. ‘The fact is, writing ‘First Christmas’ has been blessed by so many moments of grace that I could fill volumes about them,’ said Macdonald. ‘The experience has strengthened my belief in God and his quiet intervention in our world.’ Macdonald’s lovely, sumptuous book will prove an heirloom for many faithful families. The illustrations in the book provide an old-world charm, helping remind children of aspecial moment in history.

Directions:

Consider each of the choices separately and select all that apply.

1. In the context in which it appears in the passage,’compromising’ is closest in meaning to

  • A. Making an accord
  • B. Stipulating
  • C. Belittle
  • D. Detracting
  • E. Adjustment

Answer

The correct answers are C and D.

The word ‘compromising’ has different connotations depending upon the context in which it is being used. ‘Compromise’ is generally used to convey the meaning ‘an agreement’ or ‘to give and take’. At other times, it may also be used to convey the meaning ‘to discredit’. In the context of its usage in the given passage, ‘compromise’ has not been used to convey the first meaning of ‘compromise’ discussed here. The author has used ‘compromise’ to imply that the dignity and seriousness of the birth of Christ has not been depreciated or belittled. Out of all the given choices, ‘detracting’ and ‘belittle’ are the closest in meaning to the sentiment that the author wishes to convey through the usage of ‘compromise’ in the given passage. Choices A, B and E all carry nearly the same meaning that is related to carrying out an agreement. Therefore, choices A, B and E are all incorrect. In view of the above, it is evident that C and D are the correct answers.

2. Which of the following correctly explains the relation between S1: ‘In 1985, Alastair Macdonald noticed that his children’s sense of the holiday spirit centred around Santa Claus and stockings, not the true story of Christmas.’ and S2: ‘But when Macdonald went shopping for more spiritual bedtime reading, he was disappointed to see that holiday classics, like ‘The Night Before Christmas’ and ‘Rudolph,’ ignored the Christmas message.’

  • A. S1 and S2 contradict each other
  • B. S2 is a conclusion drawn on the basis of S1
  • C. S1 and S2 both served as the inspiration for the book ‘First Christmas’
  • D. If it wasn’t for S1 and S2, Alastair Macdonald would not have been motivated to write a book
  • E. It is only S1 and not S2 which is the inspiration for the book ‘First Christmas’

Answer

The correct answers are C and D.

Both the sentences S1 and S2 have been used by the author to justify the reason why Macdonald wrote the book, ‘First Christmas’. These sentences do not contradict each other; rather they both refer to the same issue from different aspects. However, S2 cannot be termed as a conclusion based on S1 because S2 is not a conclusion at all. S2 has been used by the author to present a fact. In view of the above, A, Band E are all incorrect and C and D are the correct answers.

3. Which of the following conclusions is warranted in context of the information presented in the passage?

  • A. Nowadays people are no longer interested in learning the true story of Christmas
  • B. ‘First Christmas’ has been appreciated by children as well as their parents
  • C. The Christmas message has been ignored in most contemporary children’s books
  • D. The author is not an atheist
  • E. Modern books are no longer including the Christmas message in their prints

Answer

The correct answers are B and D.

The statement at A has not been mentioned anywhere in the passage. The author does bring out that MacDonald noticed that the interest of children laid around Santa Claus and gifts and not the true story of Christmas. This does not lead to the conclusion at A because the author is talking about the year 1985. Moreover, A is referring to people and not children and hence, A is incorrect. MacDonald had noticed that the Christmas message had been ignored in most holiday classics in the year 1985. There is no mention of contemporary children’s books and their handling of the Christmas message anywhere in the passage. Therefore, C and E are clearly incorrect. The author distinctly brings out that children have liked the way the narrator recounts the Christmas story. Moreover, the author emphasises the fact that parents have also liked how the book has attracted the attention of their children towards the spiritual aspects of Christmas. Therefore, B is correct. D is also correct as the author’s belief in God has been clearly brought out in the passage and hence it is evident that the author is not an atheist Therefore, B and D are the correct answers.

4. Which of the following is true in respect of the book, ‘First Christmas’?

  • A. It narrates the story of the life of Jesus Christ
  • B. It will gain antiquity over the years
  • C. The pictures included in the book have a historical value
  • D. The text of the book has been based on the book by Dr. Seuss
  • E. It recounts the story of the birth of Christ only

Answer

The correct answers are B and E.

It has been made clear in the passage that the story of ‘First Christmas’ is based on the birth of Christ. It does not include details about the entire life of Jesus Christ. This implies that A is incorrect, but E is correct. The author has mentioned that the book will prove to be an heirloom for many families. This implies that B is correct. C is incorrect as the illustrations in the book provide an old-world charm which is not the same as having a historical value. D is clearly incorrect as the wordplay in ‘First Christmas’ is akin to Dr. Seuss which is not the same as what is being conveyed at D. Therefore, the correct answers are B and E

5. By stating ‘moments of grace’, the author is referring to moments of

  • A. adroitness
  • B. ineptness
  • C. benediction
  • D. clemency
  • E. benevolence

Answer

The correct answers are C, D and E

The author mentions ‘moments of grace’ with reference to the spiritual aspects of the holiday season. A, C, D and E are all synonyms of the word, grace, but adroitness does not mean the same as the context in which the word, grace has been used by the author. B is clearly incorrect as ineptness and grace are antonyms. In view of the above, it is evident that C, D and E are the correct answers.
